August - September I Etchingham, East Sussex
Plums are the last family of British stone fruit to ripen, signaling a change in the seasons, as summer draws to a close and autumn looms. Our Victoria plums come straight from the orchard on a family run fruit farm on the High Weald. Chris and John pick each one by hand, ensuring that the fruit is fully ripe, its meaty flesh holding a dense concentration of natural sugars - the key to exceptional flavour. We can tell these plums are grown for flavour by the colour of their skins, which is a deep red, almost purple hue. A class apart from the bland, underripe pink fruit you'd find in the supermarket, these intensely sweet Victorias are a flavour focal point throughout September.
